ADD-STYLE

Building Your Beaches Lifestyle

Matty Blundell and his wife Jess wanted to stay close to the ocean and to Narrabeen Lake where Matt runs Prokayaks. With three growing daughters they needed more and better-designed spaces to live the Northern Beaches lifestyle we all love. They considered moving, but when Add-Style showed them how they could enlarge and improve what they had they realised that was the way to go!

Cameron White, Add-Style’s Senior designer, developed the design with Matt and Jess, trying different room arrangements, adding a Living Room with a view upstairs, adding a cathedral ceiling and a balcony to the Main Bedroom suite. At the same time Add-Style developed the costings so Matt and Jess had a good idea as to what the cost would be. They were keen to keep the costs under control and to have no surprises or blowouts. This was achieved.

Add-Style got the approval and construction was soon under way. Matt, Jess and the family lived in the house throughout the upstairs addition. Oldest daughter Liberty just had to move into the backroom when her bedroom was required to build the stairs. She felt a bit lonely out there but knew she was going to benefit by getting a large new bedroom, a bit of privacy and a lot more storage. Matt said Shane the foreman was efficient and easy to talk to.

When the upstairs addition by Add-Style was complete the Blundells were able to move upstairs so that the downstairs re-modelling could happen. This work was done by another esteemed paddler and builder, Timmy Jacobs, who opened up the downstairs lounge area which had been designed and structured by Add-Style. Other high profile paddlers, Toby Hogbin and Jason Hewlett were engaged to do further finishing off work downstairs.

The Northern Beaches lifestyle includes a lot of paddling. Matt and his eldest daughter Liberty paddle together in a double at many events. But the new Living Room upstairs is where they all land up together at night to watch TV. Liberty says it’s the cosy place in the home. They can now have larger family events in the enlarged Living Room downstairs. All the family now have enough space and the extra family room allows for a bit of separation even when friends and family are over.

Matt and Jess say they wouldn’t change anything and they would and have recommended Add-Style to their friends.

THE CHUCKY

Manly’s Tim Hookins is an old sea dog with a big heart, a 73 year-old paddler who competes in the over 70 class in the Shaw and Partners Australian Ocean Racing Series and has a passion for encouraging young people to get paddling.

Tim moved to Australia 38 years ago from South Africa, and together with Bill Handley, a builder, started Add-Style Home Additions, specialising in second floor house additions – more often than not to solve the problem of expanding families and teens wanting more room, and parents wanting more privacy.

For this Saturday’s round two of the Shaw and Partners Series, THE CHUCKY, Add-Style Home Additions has given generously $4000 to the CHUCKY prize pool, but it comes with a caveat.

“Add-Style wants that money to go to young people, those in the under 17 and under 21 category. We want to encourage youngsters to start padding because it’s great for fitness.  But it also teaches courage and there’s a great camaraderie, and the beach is just the best place to hang out and forget about the stresses of life,” said Tim.

TIM HOOKINS - AN OLD SEA DOG WITH A BIG HEART

“At Add-Style, we make houses bigger and more liveable for growing families. We build a few rooms, and the teens are happier, a bigger room and often on the northern beaches a view of the ocean.

“I say just don’t just look at the view, get down the beach and enjoy it.   I didn’t start paddling till I was 51, but it has opened up a whole new world for me and taught me courage and to enjoy adventure.  I want teens to learn those skills and build confidence in themselves.
