A design and build partnership that works

Add-Style was established by an architect and builder who had the foresight to see the benefits of combining home design and construction into one
streamlined process.

Registered architect Tim Hookins and licensed Builder Bill Handley joined forces in 1985 to bring about a streamlined and cost-efficient approach to building quality home additions. Although just the two of them in the early days, their success enabled the business to expand into the team of passionate designers and builders it is today.

Come meet the team

Tim Hookins

Tim started out in architecture in 1976 and has never looked back. After graduating from a six-year architecture degree at the University of Cape Town, he moved to England and spent five years working as a project architect in London’s West End.

While designing schools and medium density housing, he learnt how to hold his own with all manner of clients, including an imposing school bursar, who used to delight in needling him with questions like “what’s the difference between a footing and a foundation?!”

Tim migrated to Australia in 1983 and continued his architectural career, designing the campus headquarters of the Catholic University in North Sydney and working as a project architect for Geoffrey Twibill and Associates.

Bill

Handley

A natural communicator, Bill has long spoken the language of design and construction.

After earning his builders licence in 1978 he worked as an independent contractor, winning work by tendering for jobs run by architects. He worked in harmony with 26 different architects, translating their design concepts into bricks and mortar.

The son of a stonemason/bricklayer, Bill grew up in Avalon in Sydney’s northern beaches. His first job was in administration and accountancy, but it was not long before he started following in his father’s footsteps – overseeing the renovations of residential units for a real estate agency. It was from here he began working with a multitude of trades and architects and first developed important organisational and communication skills.

Cameron+White.jpg

Cam White

Cam has no shortage of design accolades to his name. Graduating with a Masters of Architecture, Honours Class 1, from the University of Newcastle in 2015, his final architectural project received the Australian Institutes of Architects 2015 NSW Design Medal Commendation. He has since been awarded a prestigious architecture travel bursary.

His experience with Add-Style has given him a solid grounding in real world design and he enjoys the intricacies that come with creating designs that are both functional and aesthetic.

Give Cam a problem to solve like designing a complicated staircase or sorting out an on-site design issue and he is at his happiest!

Greg kim

Greg Graduated with a Master of Architecture in 2021 and Bachelor of Design in Architecture 2014. He joined Add-Style in 2018. Greg plays a crucial role in our company and is now one our lead designers. His meticulous attention to detail is impeccable – if there is a hidden flaw in any documentation or design, he will find it and solve it.

Greg’s design approach is thorough and logically articulated. He gives careful consideration to efficiency and forms deliberate intention with aesthetic. Greg builds rapport quickly and his clients love him – often staying in touch with him years after a project is finished. He is a much loved member of our team and a reliable source for answering tricky questions as they arise.

Jay+Handley.jpg

Jay Handley

The phone starts ringing hot for Jay at 6.30am when the building crews arrives on site.

It’s his job to manage and trouble-shoot issues during the construction process, including scheduling trades and meeting with clients once the build has begun.

He has been with Add-Style since completing school in 2002, starting out as an apprentice carpenter and progressing to Construction Manager. It’s a role that keeps him extraordinarily busy and it’s safe to say that you won’t ever catch Jay sitting still.

Tullia Hookins

As the daughter of Director and Architect Tim Hookins, Tullia had many opportunities to explore buildings under construction as she grew up on the Northern Beaches and North Shore. These visits instilled in her a passion for architecture, the environment and design.

Tullia studied Interior Design at Enmore Design College, graduating in 2010 with a Diploma in Interior Design and Decorating. At Enmore she explored the world of interior styling, design and production of drawings and projects in commercial and residential arenas.

In 2016 Tullia commenced at Add-Style working direct with clients to create exterior colour schemes for their additions. She is able to show her clients many different options using Add-Style’s very realistic computer rendering programs.

Tullia has extended her skills since 2019 to producing architectural plans for lodgement at Council and also doing much of the administrative work involved in producing Planning approvals. She may well follow in the footsteps of her father in the field of architecture.

Tim van den Bosch

Tim is one of our fine Project Managers here at Add-Style. He brings with him over 26 years of experience on the tools. He started his Building apprenticeship at the age of 16 with another local residential builder on the Northern Beaches. After perfecting his craft he spread his wings to take on a variety of projects: including running large carpentry teams for Add-Style First Floor Additions in the 2000’s. Over the years he’s worked with all types of tradesman and built a mean portfolio of achievements and trusted contacts in the industry. Tim is a versatile asset for us and both staff and clients love working with him.

What do you love about your work?

I enjoy working with the owners and getting to know them and helping to bring their dream home to life. I also love living and working locally on the northern beaches, catching a glorious wave most days.

With a background in design, Joe entered the family business as a draftsperson, and has since worked his way up to being a valued designer and consultant.

What do you love about your work?

I love working in a close knit family business because the result is a very positive and respectful work place. I believe this translates to having genuine and constructive relationships with our clients.

Kai Handley

Growing up in a family of builders, Kai has always been immersed in the construction world. With a meticulous eye for detail and a passion for aesthetics, he has always favoured the design component of the construction process.

Since joining Add-Style in 2021, Kai has become an integral part of the design team. His primary focus has been supporting our architects through the use of CAD software to help draft, model and render designs, facilitate the lodgment and progression of Council and CDC applications and liaise with various professionals involved in the design to construct process.

In 2022, Kai attained his Certificate IV in Residential Building Design and completed his Diploma of Building Design in 2023. These qualifications have harnessed him with industry skills and knowledge that aid in the creation of practical design solutions with an emphasis on style.

Charlie Stuart

Charlie is one our youngest recruits. She joined us while studying for her diploma in Building Design. Since graduating in June 2022, she now supports both our design and constructions teams and has become a versatile asset in our company with the ability and knowledge to rotate to all teams as the need arises. You may also see her onsite as she supports our digital media team to deliver the latest project updates and stories to our followers.

A Family Business

Add-Style is a business that has grown with its family.

When Bill Handley and Tim Hookins started working together in 1985 they based their business out of a home study that doubled as sleeping quarters for Bill’s first-born baby, Jay.

Little did they think that one day this baby would grow up to join the business, completing his apprenticeship with Add-Style and taking on a vital management role.

A design and build partnership that works – Bill Handley & Tim Hookins

Meet the Family - Bill, Billy & Jay Handley + Tim & Tullia Hookins

Jay Handley was the first of many family members to contribute to Add-Style’s growing business.

Billy Handley is Bill’s Third son. Although he has a strong musical talent, he has also become a licenced carpenter and worked for a long time with Add-Style.

Beau Handley is Bill’s second son, works for us intermittently and has taken on complete carpentry jobs for us. He is overseas gaining work experience.

Tim’s daughter, Tullia, is an Interior Designer. She designs many of the colour schemes which are included in the design and build package we offer.

Many of the others involved with Add-Style have been with us for many years. Our designers have completed their university studies while working for our company.

For us Add-Style is more than a nine to five job. It’s a family-owned and operated business built over decades that we are extremely proud to be a part of.
